Chances are, you know your rights. You're probably aware of laws that concern you (at least enough to keep on the right side of them). But what kinds of rights does your cat have? Does Kitty know his way around cat laws? Remember, ignorance of the law is no excuse! Make sure your cat is aware of these important - and often bizarre - cat-related laws.

Remember when we wrote about how your outdoor cat might secretly owned by other families? If you live in Montgomery County, Maryland, you might get in trouble for your cat's adulterous ways. A 1999 nuisance law prohibits cat owners (at the risk of a fine) from letting their cats visit other properties without the property owners' permissions. This law was obviously passed by someone who does not own a cat. As though we actually have control over what our cats do when we're not watching. Ha!
Fighting like cats and dogs
We've been taught by the media that cats and dogs are natural enemies. The truth is, the two species can coexist quite well. Sometimes, of course, a fight is inevitable. Tough luck if you're in Barber, North Carolina, where fights between cats and dogs are prohibited. International Falls, Minnesota, is fine with a bit of a scuffle... as long as your cat doesn't chase the dog up a telephone pole. That's apparently forbidden.
Something to keep in mind: we couldn't find a source for either law (it seems to have become a bit of internet wisdom at this point), but the Barber law probably sprang from North Carolina's anti-fighting animal cruelty laws. We have no idea what might have led to the second law, but we sure would have loved to be there.
Even if we put a bell on our cats (as some localities require, by the way), they are skilled hunters who can still get their paws on their prey. This has led to some problems, as our lovable kitties decimate wildlife. The problem got bad enough in Australia, that certain local councils have passed a curfew law forbidding cats from being outside at certain hours.
This isn't confined to Australia - cats and dogs are only allowed onto the Las Vegas Sunset Strip between 5 AM and noon. That ought to help curb kitty's gambling problem.
All kidding aside
